Physical agility testing will be offered on the following dates:

* Applicants must pass the physical agility test prior to taking the written test. Applicants may take the physical agility test more than once on the above dates until they receive a passing score. Applicants not able to pass the physical agility test prior to the written test will be eligible to re-apply at the next available opening/recruitment.

PHYSICAL FITNESS EVALUATION

The physical fitness evaluation is designed to give the applicant a chance to demonstrate his/her physical condition. The Goodyear Police Department uses the Cooper physical fitness standards. All successful applicants must obtain a minimum passing score of 40% in each category for their age and gender. Applicants must also be able to scale a six-foot solid wall.

The physical fitness test will be offered on several dates prior to the written test. Applicants may take the physical agility test more than once to obtain a passing score prior to the written test to continue on in the process. Applicants must receive a passing score on the physical agility test to be eligible to take the written exam.

All applicants will be required to complete a liability waiver prior to participating in the physical agility evaluation. The physical evaluation consists of the following:

SIT-UPS(1 MINUTE)

Sit-up protocol: The sit-up begins while lying on the back with legs bent at the knees at approximately a 45 degree angle. Fingers can be interlaced behind your head, or you may cross your arms over the chest with hands firmly on the shoulders. The upper body is then raised in a roll-up type movement to an upright position breaking the 90 degree plane or touching the knee, and is then lowered back to a lying position. One repetition will be counted using this procedure (no jerking movement is permitted). If your fingers become unlaced, or your hands come off your shoulders, the sit-up will not count.

• Modified female push ups- female candidates may choose to use the modified push up (knees on ground with feet up in the air)

Push-up protocol: The push-up begins in the up position with the arms extended and hands flat on the ground shoulder width apart. The toes and palms remain on the ground. The body and head are aligned and straight, and the body is lowered bending the elbows until the center of the chest is a fist width from the ground. Females will follow the same procedure except they may do push-up with the knees touching the ground. You may only rest in the up position. If you rest in the down position touching the ground, you are done. When resting in the up position, your body must remain aligned and straight.

SIX-FOOT SOLID WALL

All applicants must successfully scale a solid six-foot wall.
(Protocol for the wall climb will be demonstrated at the testing site)

PHYSICAL FITNESS STANDARDS ARE NOT NEGOTIABLE, YOU MUST PASS ALL EVENTS TO BE SUCCESSFUL.

WRITTEN EXAMINATION

All applicants successful in the physical fitness test are eligible to take the written examination administered by the Goodyear Police Department. Applicants must successfully pass this examination to continue in the process.

The written exam is a 100 question multiple choice test. It is divided into four sections: 1. Observation and memory. 2. Written communication/report writing. 3. Reading and understanding written information. 4. Reasoning/analytical ability. You are given two hours to complete the written test.


BACKGROUND PACKET REVIEW

Prior to the oral board interview, applicants will be asked to complete a background packet. This background packet will be reviewed, and will be evaluated for automatic and discretionary disqualifiers. All applicants must meet the AZ POST requirements for certification as a peace officer.

ORAL BOARD INTERVIEW

The most qualified applicants that are successful in the physical agility, written exam and background review, will be scheduled for an oral board interview. All applicants will be interviewed and evaluated by an interview panel made up of officers and employees of the police department. Applicants will be graded on their problem solving abilities, interpersonal skills, communication skills, demeanor and appearance.


BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION


After successful completion of the oral board interview, applicants continuing in the process will be interviewed by a background investigator.


POLYGRAPH EXAMINATION

Applicants will be given a polygraph examination administered by a qualified, state licensed police polygraph examiner. The examination will cover criminal activity, drug usage, truthfulness, integrity and employment history.


PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION

The psychological evaluation consists of two parts: a series of written tests and an interview with a certified psychologist.


CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE SCREENING AND MEDICAL EVALUATION


Applicants will be required to submit to a controlled substance screening and medical examination.

AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFIERS

The City of Goodyear Police Department and/or Arizona POST will automatically disqualify any individual who has at any time:

• Been convicted of a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Arizona.
• Been dishonorably discharged from the Unite States armed forces.
• Been previously denied certified status or has his or her current certified status revoked or under suspension.
• Illegally sold, produced, cultivated, or transported marijuana for sale.
• Illegally used marijuana for any purpose within the past three years.
• Illegally used a dangerous drug or narcotic, other than marijuana, for any purpose within the past seven years.
• Illegally used marijuana, dangerous drugs or narcotics other than for experimentation. The use of an illegal drug is presumed to be not for experimentation if:

1. The use of marijuana exceeds a total of 20 times or exceeds 5 times since the age of 21 years.

2. The use of dangerous drugs or narcotics, other than marijuana, exceeds a total of 5 times, or exceeds one time since the age of 21 years.

• Illegally used marijuana while employed or appointed as a peace officer.
• Used any hallucinogenic drug including hallucinogenic mushrooms(except during religious ceremonies). Hallucinogenic drugs also include LSD.

1. Examples of a dangerous drug or narcotic drug would be, but is not limited to:

• Cocaine, crack etc., Methamphetamine (crystal meth or speed of any kind); Anabolic Steroids (after 1994) except prescription only or FDA approved over the counter preparations.

• Illegally used dangerous drugs or narcotics while employed or appointed as a peace officer.
• Used or tried narcotic or dangerous drug by injection.
• Had a pattern of abusing prescription medication.
• Convicted of or adjudged to have violated traffic regulations governing the movement of vehicles with such a frequency so as to indicate a disrespect for traffic laws and disregard for the safety of other persons on the highway within the past three years.
• Been previously employed as a law enforcement agent and since has committed or violated federal, state, or city laws pertaining to criminal activity.
• Been convicted of any crime under a domestic violence statute.
• Lied during any stage of the hiring process.
• Falsified his or her questionnaire or application.
• Had unresolved responses to relevant issues when administered a polygraph examination.

DISCRETIONARY DISQUALIFIERS

The following disqualifiers may, upon review by the Goodyear Police Department, make you ineligible to work for the department:

• An inability to perform the essential functions of the position.
• Unlawful sexual conduct.
• Excessive traffic violations; DUI, reckless driving, moving violations.
• Any discharge from the U.S. armed forces other than an honorable discharge.
• Debts- demonstrated an unwillingness to honor fiscal contract or just debts.
• Any other conduct or pattern of conduct that would tend to disrupt, diminish, or otherwise jeopardize public trust in the law enforcement profession.
